The K-9 Kafé opened its doors on Aug. 26 in room 403, and it has been the new go-to place for students to enjoy an array of café staples, ranging from coffees to baked goods.
Run by Ms. Beaty, Ms. Kaur, and the school’s marketing students, the K-9 Kafé provides a variety of lattes, americanos, and teas for lower prices compared to popular café chains. Not only that, but they also offer different flavors of drinks, such as french vanilla, coconut, cinnamon, s’more, and, additionally, pumpkin spice–just in time for fall. For food options, the K-9 Kafé also offers cookies fresh from the oven.
“The caramel mocha was really good,” sophomore Willa Transeau said. “It honestly was better than Starbucks and Dunkin’ and way cheaper.”
Daily, the Kafé brings in over $30 from all their sales, with students flocking to their tasty treats. With about $750 worth of equipment, the process of making new treats has been quick and easy for the students who run it, which helps ease the stress of catering to such long lines.
“First, we will get cookies out of the freezer,” junior Ryland Madsen-Qualey said. ”Then we’ll toss them into the oven and then pull them out to let them cool down. Fast and simple.”
On top of that, the Kafé also offers a delivery service for teachers who are unable to leave their classrooms during 8th block.
“The delivery service has been amazing,” science teacher Ms. Leitz said. “I just scan the QR code on my phone. I order it every class, and after I place my order, within ten minutes a lovely student brings my coffee with a smile. It’s a great experience all around.”
Originally, one of the only ways for marketing students to fulfill their service hours was to work at the neighboring store, the K-9 Korner. Unfortunately, the store is only open from 9:00 to 9:23 in the morning, and not all students are able to make it to school in that timespan. This inspired the opening of the K-9 Kafé.
“It gives them that opportunity to fulfill the requirements of the class and not be limited based on their own personal transportation things,” Ms. Steeprow said. “Students may not take the class because they can’t be here before school, and now this gives them an option to do it, and sign up for the class that they really want to take.”
Since then, the Kafé’s mission has been to provide the school with café services for those who do not have access to such places outside of school or for those with a sweet tooth. Students are then provided with just as high-quality products, if not better.
“Teachers love coffee and it helps get it to them quickly so they don’t have to go out of their way anymore,” Madsen-Qualey said. “I think we just wanted to get students cookies and teachers coffee in the morning and during 8th block.”
So far, Bulldogs who have visited the Kafé have been raving about their delicious drinks, cookies, and positive atmosphere. It doesn’t seem like the store’s popularity will die down any time soon.
“The service is very good and fast,” sophomore Shiloh Simmons said. “I will definitely be going again.”
