SBHS Dancers, the school dance club, is a fun and welcoming group that invites all students to join the club in the upcoming school year.
The group is a newly formed club this year with the help of their faculty sponsor Ms. Collet. The club meets weekly on Tuesdays, as well as Thursdays during the week of performances. The club’s goals are to showcase different styles of dance that use all genres of music.
“Last pep rally we focused more on up beat hip hop with out of country songs like Tamil songs that were famous in South India,” SBHS Dancers co-president and choreographer Aakrithi Karthik said. “[For] our upcoming performance, we are working and learning afro beat, groovy Latino/Spanish music that focuses more on timing and technicalities.”
What sets this club apart from others is the overall community of SBHS Dancers. It is inclusive and encouraging regardless of skill level, as well as dedicated, as seen by the amount of time and practice they put into all of their dances.
“It’s a welcoming environment,” Valentina Smith said. “Everyone tries to hype each other up, and we always try to make connections with every dancer on the team.”
Dancing can be a great form of expression and communication. SBHS Dancers creates an atmosphere where everyone can let loose and learn something about their interests that they weren’t aware of before. Prior to this year, Stone Bridge did not have a dance team, so students weren’t able to display their talents.
“I always wanted to showcase my dancing skills to the school,” Aakrithi Karthik said. “Many people in the school had no idea that I’m a dancer, even though I’ve been dancing for years.”
Although SBHS Dancers is a club right now, the members of the group are working to make it an official school team in the near future.
“Tryout information and process is dependent on the Choreographer for next year,” Aakrithi Karthik said. “Other schools in the county have competitive dance teams and our SBHS dancers are working to make our school have one, too.”
The SBHS Dancers are planning on their next performance to be at the spring pep rally, where they will focus on new styles of dance to perform for the student body. The club’s talent and enthusiasm is enough to make anyone excited about joining the club. “Although we are called the SBHS dancers, it’s treated as a club and everyone is welcome to join it,” Aakrithi Karthik said.“It is a community we are trying to build, so there are no tryouts.”
