Paddington has returned to the big screen with “Paddington in Peru.” The story, centered around Paddington’s exciting adventure after discovering that his aunt has gone missing, has divided critics. However, this sequel has many plot twists and hilarious moments that make the movie entertaining for all ages.
The movie was released in the United States on Feb. 14 and has grossed over $164 million worldwide. On IMDB, the film currently has a rating of 6.7/10, being the lowest out of all the three movies in the series.
“Paddington in Peru” was announced in June 2022 and began production in July 2023, shooting in London, Peru, and Colombia. Many cast members returned for filming, such as Ben Whishaw, Samuel Joslin, and Hugh Bonneville. Unexpectedly, Sally Hawkins, who played Mrs. Brown was noticeably absent from the film. Hawkins assured fans that she chose not to reprise the role and return to the series. The role was taken on by Emily Mortimer, who provided the emotional center of the Brown family.
Many critics argue that “Paddington in Peru” lacks the charms of the last two entries of the franchise, which were shot under the direction of Paul King. King stepped down as director to pursue other projects such as “Wonka” but remained an executive producer of the film as first-time filmmaker Dougal Wilson took the helm.
This is the third installment in the adored Paddington series, following Paddington and the Brown family traveling from the UK to Peru to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy at the Home of Retired Bears. After arriving in Peru, Paddington discovers that his Aunt Lucy is missing, starting the adventure through Peru and into the Amazon Rainforest with the goal to make it to Rumi Rock. New characters are introduced, including Captain Hunter Cabot, played by Antonio Banderas, and his daughter Gina, played by Carla Tous. The new characters add depth to the plot through their energetic but mysterious personalities.
The acting in the movie was as consistent as the others in the series. Bonneville, who plays Mr. Brown, was able to deliver humor while maintaining touching moments. Whishaw’s voice acting as Paddington is a standout element in the movie, as he did an excellent job of keeping the character alive and thriving. Fans can rest assured that Paddington’s charming and innocent personality continues to shine through, providing the audience with one of many likeable and sympathetic characters.
In the film, there is an important underlying theme of finding the true treasure within people instead of physical treasure. The movie does a great job of conveying this message in an easy way for younger fans to understand. Through Paddington’s search for Aunt Lucy, he finds his biological bear tribe, “El Dorado.” Although he feels immediately welcomed by the bears, Paddington faces an important choice in regards to his loyalty, which emphasizes the importance of finding a home made of people who provide love and care.
“Paddington in Peru” is a lighthearted movie, filled with charm, humor, and a significant message. Though this film may not be as acclaimed as the cherished “Paddington 2,” it is still a loveable addition to the trilogy that is definitely worth seeing and is enjoyable for all ages.
